Henry Pope Anderson
December 14, 1927 - October 24, 2016

Henry Pope Anderson passed away in Oakland on Monday, Oct 24, 2016, after a long and eventful life. He was born in Mexia, TX on Dec 14, 1927, to Oscar Albin Anderson & Ethel Pope Anderson, and lived much of his adult life in the Berkeley area. He was a fierce advocate of social justice and the rights of oppressed people, particularly migrant farm workers in CA. He earned several advanced degrees and authored "So Shall Ye Reap" (1970; coauthor Joan London) and "The Bracero Program in California" (1976). He worked with most of the leaders of the CA farm labor movements of the '50s and '60s, and in his later years became a renowned labor historian. He was a talented painter and writer, lover of classical music, and perennial fan of Bay Area sports teams. Above all, Henry was devoted to his family. He is survived by (and lives on in the hearts of) his beloved wife Virginia, his five children (& spouses) Stephen Anderson (Christine), David Anderson, Rachel Anderson Elandt (Ron), Eugene Anderson (Hilary), Dorothy Anderson Rodriguez (Tony), nine grandchildren (Matt, Ken, Ryan, Emily, Theo, Jason, Lauren, Justin, Noah), and one great-grandchild (Hunter). Donations in his memory may be made to the Rural Development Leadership Network, Nature Conservancy, or Pomona College.
